Assam: Janjati Gaurav Divas Showcases Tribal Art and Culture


Along with the rest of the country, the Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR) in association with the Tribal Employees’ Welfare Association (TEWA) organized a ten-day long programme showcasing tribal tradition, art and culture in connection with the observation of Janjati Gaurav Divas at RRC complex, BGR, Dhaligaon in Chirang district.

KOKRAJHAR: Along with the rest of the country, the Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR) in association with the Tribal Employees’ Welfare Association (TEWA) organized a ten-day long programme showcasing tribal tradition, art and culture in connection with the observation of Janjati Gaurav Divas at RRC complex, BGR, Dhaligaon in Chirang district. The programme started from November 15 and came to an end on Friday with an exchange of cultural extravaganza from various tribal cultural troupes.

As part of the programmes, there were art competitions in various categories for the students, display of traditional dresses of various tribal communities, ethnic food, folk musical instruments, folk music and dance. Besides, there had been demonstrations of traditional sports like ‘Khomlainai’ and ‘Gila’ by Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA) and catching live ducks with folded eyes. The fashion show with tribal traditional attire added the flavour of the programme.

On Wednesday evening, the Executive Director of BGR-Naba Kumar Baruah inaugurated the exhibition-cum-sale stalls of traditional dresses and eateries. He also enjoyed the Khomlainai traditional wrestling of the Bodo tribe. ‘Dahal-Thungri Sibnai’ and ‘Bagurumbha’ dance were performed. ‘Gila’ traditional sports and fashion show were also performed with tribal traditional attires on Thursday.

In his speech, the Executive Director of BGR Naba Kumar Baruah said different tribal communities have their own and distinct identity, tradition, art and culture and beliefs which need to be preserved. He said the government of India had given due importance to protect and preserve the prideful tribal art and culture and their traditions through various initiatives.

He also said the observation of Janjati Gaurav Divas was an initiative that the government of India was giving due importance on tradition, art and culture of the tribal people of India. The BGR also observed the Janjati Gaurav Divas and showcased beautiful traditional attires, ethnic food items, traditional sports and folk culture etc. he added. He thanked the TEWA for organizing this wonderful programme
