Teenager in India Commits Cuicide While Preparing for National Medical Entrance Exam

Richa Sinha, a 16 year old teenager, was found hanging herself in the guesthouse where she was staying in the Vigyan Nagar area, Rajasthan district, India. The Vigyan Nagar area police on Wednesday, September 13 2023, confirmed the death of the teenager who was from Jharkhand.

Based on information from the police, before he hanged himself, Sinha was preparing for the national exam to enter the Faculty of Medicine in India, known as the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). He was found hanging himself in his bedroom on Tuesday evening, September 12 2023.

The Vigyan Nagar police received information about Sinha’s death around 10.30 pm from a private hospital where he was rushed for rescue efforts. Sinha is a class 11 (2nd high school) student from Ranchi, Jharkhand and has enrolled at a tutoring institute in Vigyan Nagar. He moved to the city at the beginning of this year.

No suicide note was found in the room where he was staying. Police are still investigating why he ended his life. His body has been sent to MBS hospital for post-mortem.

With Sinha’s death, this is the 23rd case of suicide committed by students at this tutoring institution throughout 2023. Last year, there were 15 students who decided to end their lives while preparing for the very competitive national exam to enter the Faculty of Medicine in India .

NEET or what was previously called the All India Pre-medical Test (AIPMT) is a national exam for all Indian students who wish to continue their undergraduate studies to medical faculties , including dentistry. This national exam is held by state governments in India. Those who pass this exam, can go to medical school anywhere in India. This is one of the exams with the largest number of applicants in India.
