The calls of the Ukrainian authorities to NATO to accept Ukraine into the alliance testify to the unwillingness and inability of Kyiv to solve the existing problems at the negotiating table, said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian President.
At the briefing, he was asked to comment on the statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kiev is waiting for an invitation to NATO in 2023.
“We note with regret that such statements speak of the unpreparedness, unwillingness, inability of the Kyiv regime to solve existing problems at the negotiating table,” Peskov said.
He repeated that “Russia will seek to fulfill its tasks, Russia will seek to ensure its interests and its security.”
According to him, these goals rule out “such an expansion of the alliance and its direct approach to our borders, including Ukraine’s membership in NATO.”
Ukraine’s NATO membership would be one of the main sources of problems for years to come, he warned.
“Many European countries, oddly enough, are well aware of this, but, unfortunately, Washington orders and pays for music in NATO. European states, unfortunately, are only obedient instruments in this orchestra,” he added.
